Attorney General Jeff Landry Offers Tips to Safely Welcome the New Year

BATON ROUGE, LA – With New Year’s Eve festivities approaching, Attorney General Jeff Landry is encouraging Louisiana citizens to put safety first.

“As we prepare to ring in 2017, it is important that we plan ahead to avoid any potentially dangerous situations,” said General Landry. “From travel to fireworks, I strongly encourage everyone to obey the law so we can have a safe and fun holiday.”

General Landry offers the following tips to help avoid injury and celebrate safely:
  • Immediately report drunk drivers and drunk pedestrians on the road to law enforcement.
  • If plan on drinking alcohol, designate a sober driver ahead of time.
  • If intoxicated, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, Uber, or a sober friend or relative for a ride home.
  • Never let a friend or family member drive drunk. Take his or her car keys.
  • Use fireworks only if legal in the area.
  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight one that does not go off after it has been ignited.
  • Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, houses, or flammable materials.
