Attorney General Jeff Landry: Governor’s Proposed Cuts Threaten Louisiana Department of Justice Services

Despite pledge of funding, Governor proposes budget taking direct aim at defense of pro-life laws

BATON ROUGE, LA – Attorney General Jeff Landry issued the following statement after Governor John Bel Edwards proposed another devastating cut to the Louisiana Department of Justice:

“Once again, the Governor is jeopardizing the services performed by the Louisiana Department of Justice. After taking disproportionate cuts in 2016, our office remains over $3 million short of funds already appropriated. If the Governor’s proposal to raid nearly $6 million more were to go into effect – our pursuit of child predators, fraudulent contractors, and corrupt government officials would be significantly harmed. His proposed cuts to the Department are counterproductive and would reduce our ability to bring much needed funds to Louisiana by pursuing legitimate claims on behalf of the State. What is more: today’s proposal will directly impact the legal defense of pro-life laws passed by the Legislature, despite the Governor’s pledge to fund them. I hope the Governor will work with the Legislature to fix the budget gap by putting the people of Louisiana first, not partisan politics.”
