HOMER, LA – Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced a
guilty plea by former Homer Mayor Alecia Smith on public corruption charges.
“I have made it clear since entering office that the
Louisiana Department of Justice will not stand for corrupt public officials,”
said General Landry. “The people of our State deserve better and should expect
more out of those who are appointed or elected to serve.”
Alecia Smith,
former mayor of Homer, pled guilty to two
counts of Malfeasance in Office. While Mayor, Smith diverted funds from the
town of Homer for her personal use. She then falsified public records in order
to justify her expenses and receive reimbursement. As a result of her guilty
plea – she was sentenced to two five-year deferred sentences, three years of
probation, and a $1,000.00 fine. Smith was also ordered to pay the town of
Homer $6,647.51 in restitution.
“Our office is dedicated to investigating and arresting
those who violate the public’s trust,” said General Landry. “We remain
committed to curbing Louisiana’s stained reputation of public corruption.”
